The Center of Mass plant drill is a useful drill for the case of helping athletes learn the coordination of a running single leg jump. This drill breaks things down into the specific action of the planting leg during the jump.

Athletes should choose a box high enough to allow for a fairly straight leg (it is common to use a box that is a bit too low) and then focus on pulling that leg through with the hip to provide vertical lift. The incorrect way to perform this drill would be to “push” with the knee to provide the vertical; that or using a box that is too low, which will make it impossible to perform the drill without leaning forward a bit too much.

Athletes already proficient in single leg jumping will find that this drill may not help them all that much as they are probably pretty good at the correct leg action in this type of jump already. It can be used with added weight however for a unique training stimulus to support the motor pattern of a single leg jump.
