New Jersey Enacts Law on Assisted Suicide for Terminally Ill

Gov. Phil Murphy on Friday signed legislation making New Jersey the seventh state to enact a law permitting terminally ill patients to seek life-ending medication. New Jersey will join six other states and the District of Columbia that have similar laws once it goes into effect in August. Murphy, a Democrat, signed the Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act in private. His office would not answer why the signing was not public. He earlier indicated he would support the bill, but in a personal statement, Murphy —…

‘Pressured’ chemical watchdog afraid to contradict US on Douma chemical incident – Russian envoy — RT World News

The OPCW could not come up with an unbiased report on the alleged 2018 chemical attack in Douma, as acknowledging that it was faked would’ve made the US strikes against Syria illegitimate, the Russian envoy to the OPCW told RT. In early March, the final report by the Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) stated that there were “reasonable grounds” to believe that “molecular chlorine” was used as a chemical weapon in the Syrian city of Douma on April 7, 2018. Also on…

Trump says he’ll maintain some troops in Syria, media says 400 ‘peacekeepers’ to stay — RT World News

The US plans to keep a total of 400 troops in Syria, half in the Kurd-held northern part of the country and half at the southeastern border, at Al-Tanf base, a media report says citing an administration official. Earlier, Washington said it was planning to downsize its military presence in the north of Syria to 200 ‘peacekeepers’, but would not detail plans about the Al-Tanf base, which is located in a strategic part of Syria, where it borders Jordan and Iraq.  The 400 American troops will be part of a…

Don’t Expect Mayors to End the Tax-Incentive Arms Race

We at CityLab have written quite a lot about Amazon’s HQ2 and the use (or abuse) of taxpayer-funded incentives to lure large corporations. The reality is that corporations make location decisions based on factors like the availability of talent, and then game the process to extract maximum incentives. Despite that, the ultimate HQ2 winners—New York and Virginia—offered more than $2 billion combined in various tax credits and incentives to attract Amazon. So how do America’s mayors really feel about the HQ2 bidding war and the use of business…

Developing missiles or seeking ‘better’ deal? Trump sends mixed signals to Russia over INF treaty — RT World News

The US hopes for a “much better” deal in place of the INF treaty, Donald Trump has said. At the same time, he vowed to develop a “military response” to alleged Russian violations – which the US has been doing for years, actually. The US president has sent quite mixed signals over what exactly he sought to achieve with the announcement of withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty. On Friday, Washington suspended its participation in the landmark agreement and promised to leave it altogether in 180 days unless…

Maduro slams Trump in English (VIDEO) — RT World News

Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro addressed Donald Trump in English to demand that Washington keep its “hands off” the country, after the US imposed sanctions on its state oil company in recognition of Juan Guaido as president. “Donald Trump, do not get involved with Venezuela! Hands off Venezuela! Donald Trump, hands off Venezuela!” Maduro said, blaming Washington for the political conflict that is causing tremors in the country. Maduro’s words came shortly after US imposed sanctions on the country’s state-owned oil company PDVSA in order to “help prevent the further diversion“…

Russia to work on keeping INF Treaty even if US withdraws from it – deputy FM — RT World News

Moscow will not abandon the INF Treaty and will make efforts to keep the landmark agreement in place even after Washington suspends its membership, Russia’s Foreign Ministry deputy head, Sergey Ryabkov said. “Absolutely not,” Ryabkov told journalists when answering a question on whether Russia believes the INF Treaty may be given up on. Moscow considers the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), which was initially signed by the US and the USSR to denuclearize the European continent, to be well worth preserving regardless of Washington’s actions, he added. Even after the…

Russia warns US against arms race on Earth & space after missile defense plans revealed — RT World News

US rejection of any limitations on missile defense programs and readiness to weaponize space has drawn a blunt reaction from Moscow, with the Russian Foreign Ministry warning Washington not to restart the Cold War-era arms race. Describing the US Missile Defense Review (MDR) published Thursday as “openly confrontational,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said the document shows Washington’s intent to establish military dominance and ability to conduct military operations anywhere on the planet with impunity, while rejecting any limitations on missile defense efforts. “We would like to note that the very…

Venezuelan opposition seeks to depose Maduro in US-backed ‘democratic’ coup — RT World News

The leader of Venezuela’s opposition says he is ready to seize power and is seeking army support to stage a coup against President Nicolas Maduro, after the US refused to recognize the legitimacy of his just-started six-year term. “The United States does not recognize Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro’s illegitimate claim to power. His ‘election’ in May 2018 was viewed internationally as not free, fair or credible,” US National Security Advisor John Bolton reiterated Friday, in a statement. Furthermore, the US welcomed the “courageous decision” of the country’s National Assembly President…
