‘Nier: Automata’ Could Become a ‘Future Franchise’ for Square

Thanks to impressive sales numbers exceeding expectations, Nier: Automata could become one of Square’s next franchises, the company recently said in an earnings report (via USgamer).  A collaboration between developer PlatinumGames and cult creator Yoko Taro, Automata’s currently sold over two million copies, 30-percent of which have been digital, since its release back in February. It’s also become something of a phenomenon, with some critics thinking its one of the best games of 2017, redefining how stories are told in the medium. Futhrermore, Platinum co-founder Hideki Kamiya said Taro and Automata “saved” his company. These high sales and praise clearly have publisher Square Enix’s attention. “[Automata] has proven a global hit far in excess of our expectations. It has not only reminded the world of the high quality of Japanese games, but also demonstrated significant potential for future franchise development,” the company said in its report. This potential isn’t as speculative as it may sound. Square is already posting about future Nier projects on its Japanese recruitment site. The page currently only has a listing for “scenario staff.” Nier is, however, already a franchise (kind of). Automata is the follow-up to the 2010 game Nier, and in a very convoluted way continues the game’s story. There is also a stage play, written by Taro, that helps connect the two stories. While it’s unclear, Square’s wording in its statement seems to insinuate Automata and its central story would become a franchise. Source link

Reactions to Mother Movie | POPSUGAR Entertainment

You might think you know what Mother! is about, but do you? Really? Even after you’ve seen it? That’s what everyone who bought tickets for Darren Aronofsky’s brutal new thriller starring Jennifer Lawrence is trying to figure out. Thanks to all of the gore, biblical themes, and the brain-melting twist, it’s . . . a lot, to put it lightly. Mother! has also pulled in a shockingly bad “F” rating on poll-based website Cinemascore — the worst score that can be given — so audiences have clearly been thrown by the gruesome tale. If you have similar feelings, don’t worry . . . just look at the tweets below as a form of group therapy. Source link

Watch Foo Fighters Cover AC/DC With Hives Singer in Sweden

Foo Fighters played a secret gig in Stockholm, Sweden on the eve of the release of their new LP Concrete and Gold, and to close out the concert, Dave Grohl and company brought out the Hives‘ fiery frontman Pelle Almqvist to cover AC/DC‘s “Let There Be Rock.” Before bringing out “Howlin’ Pelle,” Grohl talked about his long admiration for the Hives singer, even dressing as Almqvist and covering the Hives’ “Hate to Say I Told You So” at Foo Fighters’ Halloween 2002 gig in New York.“So tonight I thought it would be a good idea if we did a song together, one that we’ve never played with him before, but I think it makes perfect sense for this show,” Grohl said as he the intro to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” before tearing into the 1977 AC/DC track, which Foo Fighters have frequently performed live since 2015.In 2016, when AC/DC’s Brian Johnson announced he had to step away from the band, Almqvist was among the rockers who openly lobbied to be his replacement, Blabbermouth notes.“I have many, many years of experience rocking the world’s biggest stages and, according to others, I am the greatest frontman in rock, plus judging from the reaction in Australia, your crowd already seems to really like me,” Almqvist wrote on the Hives’ Facebook at the time. “Plus, I have already been singing those songs since I was six years old. So, AC/DC, please consider my application.” Source link

Is Mother! Scary? | POPSUGAR Entertainment

By now, you have either seen Darren Aronofsky’s twisted allegory starring Jennifer Lawrence, Mother!, or you are debating whether to see it because you’re afraid you can’t handle it. From one scaredy-cat to another, I can tell you what you can expect if that’s what’s holding you back. Here’s how much gore and scariness you can expect from Mother! Warning: light spoilers for Mother! are ahead. There’s a Generally Creepy Atmosphere In the trailers, the score is so haunting that I was convinced I’d be stressed out during the movie. However, in the actual film, that score is absent, and the tension in the first third of the movie is relatively low. Instead, you’re just getting to know “Mother” and “Him” (Javier Bardem). Weird Things Start Happening in the House, but They’re Just That — Weird When Ed Harris’s character shows up, a few odd things happen (like a surprise object stuck in the toilet), but when you actually see them, they’re not scary. The trailers also play up blood on the floor and eerie happenings in the basement, but again, in the movie, they’re less frightening and more curious. There Is a Significant Murder Early On One of the first major plot points is someone getting killed in the big house, but the death is more significant to the story because of what it means. There’s also almost a good jump scare from Domhnall Gleeson’s character, and again, it lacks as much impact as it had in the trailer. The Last Act Is When You Might Get Freaked Out The most violent and graphic events happen in the last part of the movie, just after Mother and Him’s home gets invaded by press, then crazy worshippers. You kind of know it’s coming by then, but the first really jarring violent scene includes people getting shot at close range. Then an explosion goes off and more people get killed. It happens fast, and it’s all more disturbing than visually graphic. OK, Some Bad Stuff Happens to Jennifer Lawrence and Her Child The worst thing that happens in the movie also f*cked with Lawrence’s head. Her character delivers a baby (we don’t see much of that, happily), but after that, her deranged husband brings the baby downstairs to a group of mad zealots, who claim the baby for their own and kill him (for more specifics on how that goes down, click here). It’s pretty awful, but honestly, it’s so over the top and fake-looking that I personally could handle it (and I don’t have a stomach for much). Finally, Mother breaks and starts killing people in the crowd herself, slashing and stabbing people; it’s bloody, but also fast. Then the crowd turns on her and beats her up pretty maliciously. It’s hard to watch just because it’s so cruel, and it’s kind of a graphic beating. All in all, if you’re curious about Mother!, but are worried it’s a horror movie, it’s not — but it is pretty dark and…

7 Things You Didn’t Know About “Josie And The Pussycats”

Because Josie and the Pussycats is a satire about consumerism, the directors went out of their way to ensure that almost every single scene featured at least one piece of product placement. Target, Ivory soap, Coke, Diesel, Ray-Ban, Apple, Ford, Krispy Kreme, Starbucks, T.J.Maxx, Victoria’s Secret, SoBe, McDonald’s, Steve Madden, Puma, Bloomingdale’s, Virgin Megastore, Kodak, Hostess, Motorola, Bugles, America Online, 7-Eleven, Frizz Ease, Converse, Hawaiian Tropic, Bebe, Visa, Revlon, American Express, Evian, Butterfinger, Pringles, Barneys New York, Nikon, Red Bull, Verizon, Sony, Adidas, Sega, Ford, Advil, Crest, Clearasil, and Tidy Cat are just some of the brands prominently shown throughout the film. But despite what many of the film’s critics assumed, none of those companies paid to be featured. “We didn’t get money for it, and that was the big scandal, I guess, when the movie came out,” Kaplan said — although she did add that brands like Steve Madden and Puma supplied the filmmakers with articles of clothing to outfit the cast. “A lot of the reviews called us hypocrites: ‘They’re taking money from these corporations to put them in the movie and they’re doing exactly what they say people shouldn’t do.’” While they weren’t lacking for brands, not all of them were on board with their products being satirized. “We were dying to do a Gap ad for the movie that was ‘Everybody in Leopard,’” Elfont said, referencing the brand’s memorably homogenized Everybody in Khakis, Everybody in Leather, and Everybody in Vests campaigns from the late ’90s. “But then the Gap read the script and were like, ‘Hell no!’ There were certain companies that didn’t want to play because they realized what we were doing, and others, like Target, were like, ‘Who cares? We’re so much bigger than that.’” Source link
