Many moms and dads want to know the benefits of using organic produce when preparing foods for their children at home. The truth is, is it’s fantastic but there are also certain circumstances where conventional is perfectly fine as well. I think the most important thing is fresh over processed or shelf stable. So whether your budget can afford conventional fresh produce or organic fresh produce the big difference here is fresh over processed. So there are certain fruits and vegetables that have thicker skins and therefore the chemicals and sprays that conventional farming uses those chemicals would not go down to the portion of the fruit or veggie that your child will be eating.

So something like an avocado has a very thick skin as does a banana. Certain fruits and vegetables you want to make sure are always organic are something like peppers and then also leafy greens or fresh spices, kale, collard greens, swiss chard, and fresh herbs. So aside from these particular fruits and vegetables that are not the best conventionally raised everything else is perfectly fine for your child fresh.

Another great way to watch your budget when you are trying to eat organic is to eat with the seasons because organic produce will inherently be lower priced during the seasons at which it’s peaking. So if you select great whole grain foods like sweet potatoes, butternut squash during fall months and then go with strawberries, blueberries during the summer months it definitely becomes much more affordable to buy organic.
