1) Complex Training Is For Advanced Athletes:

Complex training is an advanced form of training. If you’re new to training, work on building your strength and perfecting technique before incorporating complexes into your routine.

2) You Have To Be Strong:

Being able to squat two times your body weight is a prerequisite before beginning complex training. By squat, we mean a full squat, not a quarter or half squat. If you’re not able to squat two times your body weight, you’re not ready to incorporate intermediate or advanced complexes into your training.

3) Rest Is Key To Your Success:

When it comes to complex training, rest is very important. Our focus with complexes is to develop explosive power. ATP fuels explosive movements and is only available for short bursts. More importantly, ATP needs roughly 3-5 minutes to replenish. If we don’t rest for the proper amount between sets, then we won’t be able to exploit the awesome power of ATP!

The Intermediate Complex Routine:

Complex: Back Squat + Switch Lunge Jumps

Total Sets: 4

Back Squat Reps: 2-5 reps @ 60% – 85% of 1RM Max

Switch Lunge Jump Reps: 6-8 reps

Rest Between Exercises: 3-5 minutes

Rest Between Sets: 3-5 minutes

Technique Tips:

Back Squat:
* Place your feet shoulder width apart (toes pointed out slightly is okay.)
* Make sure your knees track over your toes throughout the movement.
* Don’t let your knees push forward over your toes at any point during the lift
* Get as low into the squat as possible. Below 90 degrees is ideal.
* Make sure to keep your head up and your back flat.
* Keep your weight on your heels as you explode out of the bottom of the squat

Switch Lunge Jumps:
* Start in a low lunge position.
* Explode through the front leg.
* Drive the front knee high in the air.
* Scissor your legs violently.
* Land softly and quietly.
