How deep should you squat? Should you do full range of motion squats or normal range partial squats? Is one squat variation better than the other for building muscle in your legs?

Some personal trainers will tell you to never squat below parallel because they think it’s bad for the knees. Yet Olympic lifters and powerlifters will regularly perform ass to the grass (ATG squats) and they have perfect mobility in the knee joint.

Bottom line, you’re going to hear different opinions depending on who you talk to. And when it comes to bodybuilding and fitness I’m NOT so thick headed as to think that there is only “One Way To Train”. Rather than thinking Full Squats OR Half Squats… Re-frame it to Full Squats AND Half Squats…

Just recently I received this question from Dylan Taylor and he asks:

“What is better/more effective: heavy normal range squats or lighter full squats? I like both but on leg day I usually do squats in a 5×5 squats using a normal range of motion. Should lighter full squats be thrown in to a leg workout on top of heavy regular squats, or should full squats take the place of heavy normal range squats and I just eventually work my way up into doing heavier full squats? Hope all that makes sense, thanks!”

The way I recommend Dylan approach his squat workouts is to think of full squats and half squats as 2 totally different squat exercises (which they are). Just like incline bench press and flat bench press and 2 totally different chest exercises. You never think in terms of Incline OR Flat bench, you think instead of Incline AND Flat bench. Meaning that you can incorporate both bench press variations into your workout routine. And the same applies for squats, you can use different squat exercise variations to train your legs.
